Rural & regional pharmacist recruitment
You are not doing anything wrong. Rural and regional pharmacist hiring is a local supply problem, and it needs a different workforce plan from a metro vacancy.

The situation
A 2025 study of 20 regional and rural Victorian pharmacy employers found owners describing long delays, limited applications, high recruitment and locum costs, and isolation as a central barrier. The practical lesson is simple: the candidate is choosing the town as much as the job.
Free rural vacancy review
A rural vacancy can look like a recruitment issue while the real constraint is retention, supervision, location fit or candidate supply. Start by naming the pressure clearly.

Why the vacancy feels different
A national registration number does not tell you how many pharmacists are available for your town, your roster, your service mix or your supervision model. We treat effective supply as a chain, not a headline count.
Evidence note: we do not publish a national rural pharmacist vacancy percentage because we could not verify a current official figure suitable for a public marketing page.
What PWS does differently
A rural vacancy is rarely solved by posting the same ad for longer. We look at location fit, process fit and retention risk before we recommend the recruitment route.
01
We assess whether a candidate is genuinely open to the location, the community and the work pattern, not only whether they can perform the job.
02
Overseas-qualified pharmacists can help, but only when skills assessment, OPRA, provisional registration, internship and supervision are planned honestly.
03
Rural retention is shaped by autonomy, community connection, partner work, housing, schools and whether leave can be covered without burning people out.
Allowance exposure
The Regional Pharmacy Maintenance Allowance is administered by the Pharmacy Programs Administrator for eligible MM3-MM7 pharmacies. For 2025/26, the published annual matrix ranges from $10,845 to $101,160 depending on MM category and prescription volume.
PWS does not administer the programme or provide eligibility advice. We raise it because staffing continuity can be commercially important in regional workforce planning.
First call
You will not get vague optimism. You will get a practical read on the role, the location, the likely route and the risks that need to be solved before a placement can last.
No obligation. If we do not think we can help, or if the salary, timeline or workforce plan needs to change, we will say that clearly.
